Food & Friends
Food & Friends provides home-delivered meals and groceries to persons living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses. During my time at Food and Friends, I packaged meals, bagged groceries, conducted quality control, developed educational materials, facilitated a nutrition presentation at a community center, and performed telephone menu recalls.
Montgomery County Public Schools
While at Montgomery County Public Schools, I was able to get a first hand view of how school Food-Service operates and the important role of the RD. I conducted lunch-time food tasting with students and developed nutrition articles for the Parent Newsletter.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed)
My initial experience with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (formerly known as Food Stamp Nutrition Education) was as a nutrition educator for the Nutrition Education Program of Drexel University, part of the School District of Philadelphia's "Eat.Right.Now" Program. This program is funded through the USDA and provides nutrition education programs to food-stamp eligible adults and children. I really enjoyed working with the parents, students, teachers and nurses.
During my internship rotation with the Maryland Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program, I conducted nutrition presentations for seniors; researched online for free or low-cost nutrition, physical activity or health-related events in the Maryland community for the “Eat Smart, Be Fit Maryland" website; and worked with the Food Stamp Nutrition Connection or FSNC (now known as SNAP-Ed Connection), an online resource center for State and local Food Stamp Nutrition (FSNE) providers.
