DIETETIC INTERNSHIP
The University of Maryland College Park Dietetic Internship provided a thorough training in general dietetics with an emphasis on Information Management and Communication. Our Director, Mrs. McShane, referred to our program as a 10.5 month job interview because every experience throughout the internship provided us an opportunity to network with colleagues and make a "invaluable first impression".
The 43-week program consisted of approximately 1100 supervised practice hours in clinical, community, food service management and information technology. Each week was generally divided into four 8-hour days of supervised practice; the fifth day (typically Monday) was devoted to class lectures, technology training, and joint class days with other internship programs in the area. See here for work samples.
This program also provided me the opportunity to meet many role models and to develop a wide network of professional contacts in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The diversity of my experiences during this internship was an integral component in successfully completing this program and becoming a Registered Dietitian.
